COVID-19 Testing Startup Curative Hosts ‘Safe Holiday’ Public Health Event for D.C. Residents

Three-Day Event Pairs No-Cost Public Testing with Soapbox Soap Donation for Upcoming Holiday Season

WASHINGTON, D.C. — November 18, 2020 — COVID-19 testing startup Curative announced today a three day event that will focus on COVID-19 public testing at multiple locations across the D.C. region starting this Friday, November 20th through Sunday, November 22nd. Pop-up testing sites in two locations will provide no cost testing to D.C. area residents. The event aims to promote health education and ‘knowing your COVID-19 status’ prior to holiday traveling to help reduce transmission for a safe holiday season.

“Curative is focused on ensuring the D.C. community stays safe from COVID-19 this upcoming holiday season by providing testing at no cost to residents,” said Fred Turner, CEO and co-founder of Curative. “We are proud to utilize Curative’s scientific expertise and knowledge to educate the public on the COVID-19 pandemic in partnership with local public health entities. Our unique, self-collected oral fluid swab COVID-19 test offers a painless, simple option with quick 24-48-hour results and no cost to patients.”

Curative offers an oral-fluid swab testing—an alternative method to nasopharyngeal or brain swabs in testing for COVID-19. The self-collected oral fluid swab involves having the person cough first, which releases virus from the upper and lower respiratory tract. The virus is then caught in the saliva, the patient then swabs the inside of their cheeks and the roofs of their mouths. Once complete, the patient seals their test within a secure container and returns it to a medical professional to be administered in the lab. The entire Curative test is done without having to come into close contact with others, therefore eliminating the need for personal protective equipment (PPE) changes. The sample collection process can be viewed here.

Soapbox, a local, purpose-driven personal products company is partnering with Curative during their outreach campaign and will be donating 12,000 bars of soap. The soap will be handed out to the thousands of people expected to receive testing to emphasize the importance of hand hygiene and to encourage people to wash their hands.

“As a mission-driven company, Soapbox is passionate about making hygiene products like lifesaving soap accessible to everyone,” says David Simnick, Soapbox CEO. “We know that social distancing is especially painful during the holidays and appreciate the opportunity to partner with Curative as they offer testing at no cost to help curb a surge of new Covid-19 cases this winter. We are proud, as a D.C. based company, to be able to do this work in our local community.”

Testing will be available by walk-up or appointment in Wards 5 & 8 in D.C., providing accessible testing to the underserved areas of the D.C. regions. Appointments are available at curative.com. Walk-ups are welcome, but attendees must make an appointment upon arrival on-site to complete testing.
